The Sydney Bears are excited to announce their final import, Canadian forward Brent Vandenberg for the 2016 Season. Vandenberg played NCAA hockey with Niagara University where he played with Bears import, Ryan Annesley before playing three seasons with Wilfrid Laurier University in the CIS. During his college career he totaled 31 points in 89 games. Vandenberg played with the Dundas Real McCoys in the ACH where he registered 9 points in 16 games. During the 2013–14 Season Vandenberg got his first taste of hockey in the Southern Hemisphere playing for the Canterbury Red Devils in the NZIHL where in 8 games he registered 15 points. On playing the 2016 season with Bears Vandenberg said: “I'm looking forward to playing again with one of my old friends Ryan Annesley, getting back into a room and battling with a good group of guys, and pursuing a championship. We won the national championship when I was in New Zealand and it was a thrill, I’d love to have that feeling again. When I was playing in New Zealand I knew Australia had a league. I also had a few old teammates that have played in the league before. I think it's starting to slowly gain more awareness in North America. Speaking with Ron and following online, it looks as though we have a chance to be very competitive this year. I'm also looking forward to seeing all the beauty that comes with the country. ” Vice President Matt Burrell is looking forward to having a player like Brent to add depth to the roster: “After speaking with Ron, we’re all really looking forward to having Brent play with the Bears this season. He will bring character and depth to an already strong team of great imports and quality Australian talent. He’s going to be a great asset to the club for season 2016. We can’t wait for it to get underway.” While it wont be the first time Vandenberg has visited Australia, it will be his first time in Sydney, and he is looking forward to making the move: “Any time you can play hockey in another country it's an ample opportunity. The fact the team sets you up with accommodations and a good job, along with the beaches and atmosphere of the country was a no brainer. I've been to Australia before, but never Sydney.” Make sure you catch Brent and the rest of your Sydney Bears in action this season. The Bears kick of their Goodall Cup campaign when they take on the CBR Brave this Sunday, April 24 at Penrith Ice Palace. Get your tickets online now! |
