The Sydney Bears have signed Graeme Strukoff to beef up the defensive pairings for the season 2018. Originally from Chilliwack, British Columbia, Strukoff spent four years playing NCAA hockey for the University of Huntsville-Alabama where he was awarded a scholarship. Prior to his college career, he had three successful seasons in the BCHL with the Trail Smoke Eaters where he was assistant captain during the 2010-11 season.
Most recently he played for the Fayetteville FireAntz in the SPHL, a team he shared with former Bears import, Nick Rivait.
Expect big hits and a dedication to stopping the other team’s offense from the Canadian native who said: “On the ice I play defence and I try to keep it simple while playing a physical game. Fans shouldn't expect me to put up a bunch of points, but I will work my hardest every shift trying to shut down the opposition forwards and take great pride in killing penalties.”
Coach Ron Kurpwosky is excited about adding more depth to the Bears defense this season:
“Our defense is becoming more and more solid ahead of the season. We have some talented young players who are really starting to make their mark in the AIHL and adding Graeme to the mix along with Annesley providing some experience and leadership, other teams are going to have a tough time getting pucks to the back on the net.”
Apart from Hockey Strukoff spends his downtime being outside as much as possible, whether it’s playing baseball, hiking or snowboarding. On what he’s most looking forward to doing while he’s in Sydney; the main thing – winning a championship:
“I have been on many great teams, I have yet to win a championship at a high level and hope I can contribute to that in my time in Sydney.
I am very excited about this opportunity. I have met many Australians who have travelled to my area of Canada to ski and snowboard, and am looking forward to coming to Sydney and seeing how things are done Down Under!”
You can see Graeme in action when the Bears take the ice for the first home game of the season on 6th May @ Macquarie Ice Rink.
