| Bears sign Canadian Geoff Irwin for 2016 |

The Sydney Bears are excited to announce the signing of their second import, Canadian, Geoff Irwin for season 2016.The Victoria, BC native played four years of NCAA hockey for Minnesota State University, Mankato where he totaled 84 points in 143 games, as well as captained the team in his senior year. Irwin also had four successful seasons in the ECHL where he totaled 130 points in his 233 games. While playing for the Bears, Irwin will also be studying his JD in law at the University of Sydney. On his experience so far in Australia and playing his first season in the AIHL, Irwin said: “What I like about Sydney so far, besides the university is the beaches and the weather. I’m [also] looking forward being with a good group of guys, and winning some games this season!” Irwin brings a wealth of experience and skill to the Bears, and will be a mentor for younger players to learn from. On the signing of Irwin, Sydney Bears Captain, Michael Schlamp said: “I’m looking forward to having a player like Geoff on the ice this season with the boys. We’ve had a few training sessions so far, and not only does he play great hockey, he fits in perfectly with the team dynamic which is just as important. It’s going to be a great season for the Bears and having his skill will only add to the talent we already have. We’re all really pumped for the season to get underway.” The Bears play their first home game against the CBR Brave on Sunday, April 24.
