Sydney Bears traveled across town for the second Battle Of Sydney against the Sydney Ice Dogs at Liverpool on Sunday May 8. With the Bears beating CBR Brave in a shootout the previous day while the Ice Dogs were thrashed by Newcastle North Stars 9-1, the Bears were keen to reply to last week's game where the Ice Dogs won on Bears ice, 6-2.
Tomas Landa gave the Bears the lead of the game midway through period 1 while Geoff Irwin extended the lead 16 seconds into period 2. Down 2-0, the Ice Dogs scored 3 unanswered goals for them to lead 3-2 at the end of the second period.
Cameron Todd scored the third goal for the Bears in the early stages of period 3 to level the scores 3-3 while the Bears were shorthanded. Try as they might, neither team scored for the remainder of the period. The Bears were through to their second shootout in as many days.
However, the Bears were unable to convert during the shootout and the Ice Dogs won the game 4-3 (SO) as a result of their first successful shootout shot.
Not disgraced in any way and fighting until the end, the Bears took the game right up to the Ice Dogs. However, the 3 unanswered goals in period 2 were vitally important in the final result. It was an exciting game with many big hits, lots of passion and many battles up and down the ice.
The weekend resulted in 3 points for the Bears - 2 for their shootout win in Canberra & 1 for their shootout loss against the Ice Dogs.
Next weekend, the Bears travel to Brisbane for 2 games against the Melbourne Ice.
